Idabelle Main papers, 1895-1978.

Collection comprises correspondence, missionary publications, diaries, photographs, and a biography concerning Idabelle Main, a Christian missionary in China from 1909 to 1949. Correspondence includes letters to and from Main, 1895-1969, as well as the correspondence of her stepson Orrin William Main, 1969-1978. Publications include literature from Hwanan College in Foochow, China and assorted missionary publications. Collection also includes diaries and memoirs, 1910-1965, and a biography of Main written by her niece. Photographs include prints of Chinese subjects, including refugee children and missionary workers, 1920-1948.

American Idabelle Main was a Christian missionary in China from 1909-1941 and 1946-1949. She served as a teacher, administrator, and editor in Tientsin (Tianjin), Shanghai, and Foochow (Fuzhou). She was assigned by the Women's Society of Christian Services of the Methodist Church to teach at the Keene School in Tientsin (Tianjin) in 1909. In 1921 she was appointed president of Hwanan College in Foochow (Fuzhou), a position she held until 1926 when she returned to Tientsin (Tianjin) to serve as e...
